Numbers Game

Chan started it yesterday by discussing how she was a hostage to numbers. Well - I guess technically that's not true, she didn't start it. Back in March my doctor suggested (quite strongly) that I work on losing an extra 20# that I've been carrying. Then Angie (who has always had such a healthy body image) joined weight watchers. And before you know it - I'm obsessed. Numbers - they are all important and mean something, right? What's the temperature? What size do you wear? How much do you make? How many stitches are in each row of that shawl? What size shoe do you wear? How many stairs can I climb? How many calories? etc., So - do you obsess over any of those numbers? I do, but I try not to on the blog. But trust me - Chan gets an earful through gmail chat regularly.

  1. No, they're not all that important. What's the temperature/ Does it really matter if it's 86 or 89? What are you going to do about it anyway? You have no control over it. You can make yourself feel warmer or cooler, but you can't change the temp.

How much do you make? It's either enough or not. You adjust.

How many stitches in each row? If you're off a stitch or two, you adjust it. No one else will ever know.

What size shoe do you wear? I don't know what size shoe anyone else wears, not even my best friend. What possible difference could it make to me unless her feet were so small that she kept falling over.

How many stairs can I climb? I guess I'm just grateful that I'm able to climb stairs. I know some people who can't.

Then there's what size do I wear and how many calories? I wear different sizes in different things. I've been too thin and I've been too heavy. I've nearly starved myself and I've given into guilty pleasures. Who cares?

I'm happy. I'm healthy, I have a man who loves me, some loyal friends, a gorgeous house, ten dogs who think I'm the smartest creature alive because I know how to open the refrigerator. What more could I want. Numbers be damned.

  2. Yeah, I do numbers. A lot. thus, my recipes specify stupid things like 20 turns of the pepper grinder, or a given number of shakes of, say, garlic powder. I know exactly how many stairs are in each staircase in my house. And I'm bothered by the fact that I sew in size 14, because back when I was young and gorgeous, I wore a size 3, and nothing more. Yeah, I know, sewing sizes are bigger numbers. But we all know that the number matters. So, obsess away; we all do, whether we admit it or not.

  3. Hi gMarie!!!
Thank you so much for visiting my blog. I pop in every now and again when I see your comments on Chan's blog but I've never formally introduced myself. Yes, I was a lurker:)

I'm not much of a numbers person myself. If not for the fact that my son has been reminding me of my age this past week, I would have to play the numbers game to actually figure it out. (I'm serious, I have to calculate years and dates:) I think it has to do with my fear of Math...

Speaking of games, we're "playing" the Picnic Game over at my blog. We "played" last year and it was such fun, I thought we'd do it again. You're more than welcome to join us if you like. It's the one where you recite, I'm going on a picnic and I'm bringing... Hope to "see" you there!!!

P.S. Next time I visit, I'll be sure and say hi...

  6. You, Chan and numbers. Now I'm obsessed! LOL

How many times the hubby changes the tv channel
How many times Mr. Bettis must be let back inside (since he so happily head-butts the door and let's himself out)
How many UFO's are lurking here in the knitting baskets.
How many cookies I've eaten(HEY! I'm not counting that one)
The list goes on and on and on.......
    LOL
